"My Philosophy of Healthy Living"    My belief is that it is not just good enough to tell my patients how to live a healthy life.....I need to live that lifestyle and lead by example.  For my first eleven years of my professional career I was an officer in the U.S. Army, six years active duty and five years reserve.  During that time I held to a regular regimen of physical fitness.  After my departure from military service I fell short of my physical fitness goals.  I reached my nadir just over two years ago when I was fifty pounds overweight, out of shape and could not walk up a flight of stairs without huffing and puffing.  I have always enjoyed sports, especially water skiing, snow skiing and bicycle riding.  I unwittingly reached a point where I was no longer able to enjoy these activities; I had let my body slip into a state of disuse and neglect.  I realized I could not preach fitness to my patients if I was not fit myself.  Therefore, two years ago I made the decision I was going to turn things around and serve as an example to my families of what is achievable with some willpower, the proper diet and regular exercise.  This journey back from obesity to an active lifestyle has been very rewarding.  I have shed fifty pounds, my cardiovascular condition is as good as it was in my army days and my sports performance is nearly at my best ever.  My goal is to show my patients that they too, no mater what their starting point, can enjoy an active lifestyle in the body they want to have.  I want to work with obese teens and preteens, to get them started on a path to physical fitness and weight reduction.  My path has not been easy; I have had numerous pitfalls and stumbling blocks along the way.  I have built a web page with resources for obesity and another for important aspects of sports medicine.  Lastly I have chronicled my return to an active lifestyle with my gains and losses; by pluses and minuses to show that even though the path is not always easy, it is always worthwhile.  If you are a child, adolescent or parent of a child who is obese and want to find the path to a better body, healthier lifestyle and have more fun and enjoyment in the physical side of life, then I want you to make an appointment to see me.  In the meantime you can read about my journey back to fitness on the following web page.  DR CAIN'S JOURNEY
